In 1984, Jim and Donna went to Skagway, Alaska, to take advantage of
an opportunity to share a retail space for the summer tourist season.
Well, they continued to come back to Skagway for the next 15 years.

Those summers in Alaska inspired Jim to add Alaskan motives to his
silver and gold coin piercing work. He also explored the indigenous
materials of Alaska. He began to carve and sculpt fossilized walrus tusk
and teeth and wooly mammoth tusk, which opened up his art to three
dimensional works.

The results are unique small ivory sculptures and Damascus steel
knives (forged by fellow League craftsman Bill Saindon) with carved ivory
and exotic hardwood handles, sheaths and bases.
